Signs of throat cancer are very easy to recognize. These signs will generally be painless if the cancer has just begun to grow or if it is still in the stage of development. Signs of throat cancer in stage one include a feeling of fullness in the throat or chest, hoarseness, or pain when swallowing. In stage two, these signs of throat cancer will begin to occur with occasional pain or discomfort. Stage three may not have pain in the throat, but there may be some difficulty swallowing. In stage four, cancer has spread widely to the lymph nodes and bones, causing loss of voice, trouble breathing, and swelling of the face and extremities.
Signs of throat cancer in stage one can be determined by a simple physical exam, typically done at the doctor’s office. If cancer is detected at this stage, a biopsy will be performed. A small lump or growth will be taken from the lobe of the tumor. A CT scan will identify the exact location of the cancer.
Signs of cancer in the mouth
This can include persistent bad breath, difficulty eating or swallowing, a white or yellowish mucus discharge, hoarseness, and earaches. These signs will usually clear up within a few weeks unless the cause is a serious condition like leukemia or a blood clot in the mouth. If the cause is a serious medical condition or infection, however, it may not go away on its own. It may require treatment. A physician will probably perform a physical exam, take the history, do some laboratory testing, and order a series of tests to make sure it is not something more serious.
After the initial diagnosis, if cancer has not spread, a physician can perform a throat biopsy. This procedure is done under general anesthesia. If cancer has spread (be cancerous), other signs and symptoms will appear and the doctor will perform surgery to remove the cancerous tissue.

If the cancer goes away by itself without treatment, the doctor will probably recommend treatment for irritability, pain or swelling in the mouth, hoarseness or hearing loss, and earaches. However, there are other signs and symptoms that a person may experience. If you start to get a cough or a sore throat, you may think it is just the flu. It can be a sign of cancer in the throat. When a person starts having trouble swallowing, he or she may also think they are getting the flu.
Several Risk Factors can increase the chance that a person will have a problem with the mouth.
The first risk factor is a weakened or undeveloped bone in the jaw. People who have a misaligned jawbone (which can also be the case if the cancer has spread) are more likely to have problems with the mouth. People who smoke or have weak immune systems are at higher risk. Smokers are more likely to develop mouth cancer because of the constant exposure to second-hand smoke.
Sinusitis, asthma, rhinitis, deviated septum, and ear infections can all cause difficulty in swallowing. Other things that can change the size and shape of the pharynx are the size and shape of the tonsils, the size and shape of the adenoids, the placement of the soft palate, and the position of the uvula. All of these things can either decrease the air flow through the mouth or increase the risk of an obstruction or an increased risk of developing a cancerous change in the throat. Another common problem that can affect the pharynx is sleep apnea. This condition causes pauses in breathing while the person sleeps, which increases the risk of breathing complications like tonsillitis and adenoids.
